There's a lot of crossover. A high-spec caravan can feel more luxurious than a basic lodge, so judge each one on its photos and description rather than the label.
Holiday parks range from small, peaceful sites with a handful of homes and a view of the sea, to big resorts with pools, entertainment, restaurants and kids' clubs. Neither is better — but booking the wrong one for your trip can spoil it. A couple after a quiet weekend won't love a lively family resort in August, and children may be bored on a sleepy adults-focused site.

Some caravans and lodges are let directly by the park; many others are privately owned and let by their owners when they're not using them. Privately owned homes are often lovingly kept — they're someone's own holiday home — and the owner usually knows the area well.
Owners also tend to have gaps around their own use: a few midweek nights here, a week in October there. Those gaps are exactly where you're most likely to find good value.
Summer holidays and bank holidays are peak time on most parks, with prices to match. For better value and calmer parks, look at term-time breaks, midweek stays and the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn. Many parks have long seasons, and a lodge with a hot tub on a crisp autumn evening can be just as memorable as a summer week.
Most caravans and lodges come with the basics — a kitchen with pots, pans and crockery, and often bedding — but it's worth checking with the owner and packing for anything that isn't included.
Useful extras include towels if they're not provided, tea towels, washing-up liquid, a few kitchen staples, slippers for chilly mornings, and waterproofs for walks.
