Overview
Bristol is one of the UK's most active construction cities in 2026. From a transformational railway revival on the Portishead line to the opening of a £500 million university campus beside Temple Meads, thousands of tradespeople, contractors, and project workers are descending on the city this year — and finding a good base at a fair price matters more than ever.
This guide covers everything a work crew needs to know: where to stay, how much to budget per person, how to size your booking for different team configurations, and the practical Mon–Fri tips that make week-long stays genuinely comfortable.
Why Bristol Is So Busy for Construction Crews in 2026
Several landmark projects are driving demand for contractor accommodation across the city right now.
MetroWest Phase 1b (Portishead Railway Line) is the headline scheme. Morgan Sindall is building two entirely new stations — at Portishead and Pill — relaying track along the former freight corridor and installing a passing loop to allow hourly services. The £80 million programme got under way properly in spring 2026 and runs through to a target opening in winter 2028–29, meaning crews will be on site for roughly two and a half years.
Bristol Temple Meads Station Redevelopment is running concurrently. Network Rail is completing scaffolding removal from the main train shed (target: December 2026) while the new £23 million Eastern Entrance is being fitted out with ticket gates and equipment ahead of a September 2026 public opening. A separate Southern Gateway transport hub — new bus stops, a secure cycle building, and improved walking and cycling routes — has planning consent submitted and is edging towards construction.
Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus by the University of Bristol completed its main construction phase in May 2026, with Sir Robert McAlpine handing over the 38,000 sq m building for a September 2026 opening. The wider Temple Quarter regeneration — up to 10,000 homes alongside commercial development across the zone east of Temple Meads — has Muse appointed as master development partner, meaning groundwork and enabling packages are starting to come forward.
Bedminster Green / East Bedminster Regeneration is a multi-developer programme targeting more than 2,000 homes on five sites either side of Malago Road in Bedminster. Heat network pipe installation is running through Freestone Road from spring to autumn 2026, and the overall programme runs through 2027.
