Overview
Stafford rarely makes the headlines that Birmingham or Manchester do, but it has quietly become one of the more useful bases in the Midlands for travelling crews. It sits on the M6 between junctions 13 and 14, on the West Coast Main Line, and within a short drive of several live or about-to-start sites: a grid equipment factory that is doubling its output, a 15-acre brownfield regeneration next to the station, the final phase of a 1,500-home urban extension, the former Rugeley power station, and the HS2 works around Lichfield.
That spread of work is also the problem. Hotel stock in the town is small, prices move sharply with the season, and crews working Monday to Friday often find the budget chains booked out midweek. This guide covers what is driving demand around Stafford in 2026, where crews tend to stay, what you should expect to pay, and how to keep a multi-week booking under control.
What is driving demand around Stafford in 2026
GE Vernova's grid manufacturing expansion
The biggest single driver of skilled-trade demand in the town is GE Vernova's grid solutions business, which makes high-voltage direct current (HVDC) equipment in Stafford. In June 2025 the company began work to expand what the Express & Star described as the UK's only large-scale grid manufacturing facility, with the aim of doubling the site's output of HVDC transformers and creating around 100 roles. An earlier announcement, in September 2024, set out a separate expansion of the HVDC valve facility at Redhill on the north side of the town.
The building work itself has been substantial. ACS Construction Group, appointed principal contractor, describes a new 42-metre-high HVDC test facility of about 2,200 square metres, a separate test supply building, a new dispatch building, around 1,700 piles and more than 15,000 cubic metres of reinforced concrete, all on a live manufacturing site. Fit-out, commissioning and specialist installation crews follow that kind of build, and many of them are on rotation from elsewhere in the UK and Europe.

Staffordshire County Council and Stafford Borough Council are preparing the former Saint Gobain factory site off Doxey Road, about 15 acres next to the railway station, for redevelopment as part of the Stafford Station Gateway scheme. Up to £16.5 million of a £20 million government award is allocated to the Doxey Road works. Trial excavations began in February 2026, and the councils have said main remediation is planned for the end of 2026 or early 2027, subject to planning consent. Remediation contracts typically bring groundworks and plant crews for months at a time, so expect demand close to the station to build through the winter.
Burleyfields, west Stafford
Taylor Wimpey applied in May 2026 for approval of the final phase, up to 285 homes, at Burleyfields in Castlefields. The wider West Stafford Strategic Development Location is allocated for up to 1,500 homes. Housebuilding phases like this keep a steady flow of subcontract trades — groundworkers, bricklayers, roofers, M&E — in town for long stretches.
Former Rugeley power station
About 10 miles south-east of Stafford, Vistry bought the former Rugeley Power Station site from Engie with outline permission for 2,300 homes, an all-through school, a riverside park and commercial space. In June 2026 Stafford-based Housing Plus Group signed contracts with Vistry to deliver 398 affordable homes, following approval of a first phase of 547 homes and a main access road. Work was expected to start within weeks of that announcement, with the first phase likely to run to around 2030. For crews on that site, Stafford is often easier for accommodation than Rugeley itself.
HS2 around Lichfield
HS2's Staffordshire works are around 16 miles south-east of Stafford. According to HS2's summer 2026 construction lookahead, permanent construction at Fradley and Handsacre is on hold until 2030, but work continues between Whittington and Fradley through 2026 and into 2027, including the Rykneld Street overbridge, the Streethay retaining structure and highway works on the A5. Most HS2 crews base themselves closer to Lichfield and Tamworth, but Stafford is a realistic overflow when those towns are full.
Where crews stay
Most working crews near Stafford end up in one of four places.
Stafford town centre and the station area. The most practical base for the Doxey Road and GE Vernova sites. Terraced houses here suit crews of three to five, and there is easy access to shops and takeaways.
North Stafford, near M6 junction 14. Good for anyone heading north towards Stone or Stoke-on-Trent, or travelling home on a Friday. The budget hotels at the junction fill quickly midweek.
Villages to the east (Weston, Great Haywood, Hixon, Little Haywood). Quieter, with more detached houses and farm conversions that have the driveway space crews need. Handy for Rugeley via the A51.
Rugeley, Cannock and the Lichfield fringe. Closer for Rugeley and HS2, but with less choice. Worth checking before you assume Stafford is the only option.
KAYAK's Stafford page, checked in October 2026, showed an average weeknight rate of £79 and an average weekend rate of £95 for a room in the town. It also showed October as the most expensive month on average, at around £102 a night, and March as the cheapest, at around £56. Budget chain prices listed on the same page included Travelodge Stafford M6 from £67 and Travelodge Stafford Central from £70.
Those are per-room prices. If each worker needs their own room, a five-person crew at the weeknight average comes to roughly £395 a night before parking, laundry and meals — and the October average would push that higher.
Shared houses and serviced homes
Whole-house lets are where the savings tend to come from for crews of three or more. Comfy Workers, a contractor accommodation provider, quotes a typical UK range of £35 to £65 per person per night, depending on location, property type, length of stay and how many people share. A Stafford terrace or village house with three or four bedrooms, priced within that range, usually undercuts four or five individual hotel rooms on a weekly stay, and comes with a kitchen and a washing machine.
October is the most expensive month for Stafford hotels on the KAYAK data, so a crew arriving this month should book early or look at houses rather than rooms. The M6 between junctions 13 and 14 is also the main route in and out of town; a base on the same side of the motorway as your site saves time at both ends of the shift.
Parking and vans
Town-centre terraces often have on-street parking only, which can be difficult with two or three vans and a trailer. If you have more than two vehicles, ask the host directly about off-road parking, or look at the eastern villages where driveways are more common.
Kitchens and laundry
For stays longer than a week, a proper kitchen and a washing machine matter more than anything else. They cut the daily spend on meals and keep workwear clean without trips to a launderette. Check that the oven and hob are big enough to cook for the whole crew, not just a couple.
Monday to Friday stays
Many Stafford crews go home at weekends. Some hosts will price a Monday-to-Friday block below their weekend rate, because weekends are when leisure guests book. Ask for a weekday-only price rather than assuming the nightly rate applies. The Monday to Friday accommodation guide explains how those arrangements usually work.
Lodging allowances and tax
If your crew is paid a lodging allowance under the CIJC Working Rule Agreement, or you are claiming accommodation as a business expense, keep the booking and invoice in the company name. The CIJC lodging allowance guide covers what qualifies.
Ask for a price, do not just accept one
Rates around Stafford vary widely between the start and end of a month and between a two-week and a three-month booking. On Offer2Stay, you can post what your crew needs, set the price you want to pay, and let local hosts send their best offers. It is worth doing even if you end up booking elsewhere, because it shows you what the market will actually accept. You can post a request or browse contractor accommodation across the UK.

The figures and rules above come from the following, checked at the time of writing.
How much does contractor accommodation near Stafford cost per night?+
Hotel rooms in Stafford averaged £79 on a weeknight and £95 at weekends on KAYAK in October 2026. Shared contractor houses are usually priced per person; Comfy Workers quotes a typical UK range of £35 to £65 per person per night, depending on location, property size and length of stay.
Which construction projects are bringing crews to Stafford in 2026?+
The main ones are GE Vernova's HVDC transformer and valve expansion, the Stafford Station Gateway remediation on Doxey Road, the final phase of Burleyfields in west Stafford, the former Rugeley power station housing scheme about 10 miles away, and the HS2 works around Lichfield.
Is Stafford a good base for the HS2 works in Staffordshire?+
It can be, especially when Lichfield and Tamworth are full. The active HS2 sites between Whittington and Fradley are around 16 miles from Stafford, so expect a longer commute than a Lichfield base, but more accommodation choice.
Where should a crew working at Rugeley stay?+
Rugeley has limited accommodation, so crews often look at Stafford, the villages along the A51 such as Great Haywood, or Cannock. Stafford and the eastern villages usually give more choice of whole houses with parking.
When is the cheapest time to book in Stafford?+
On KAYAK's figures, March is the cheapest month for Stafford hotels, averaging around £56 a night, and October the most expensive, at around £102. If your project dates are flexible, a spring start is noticeably cheaper.
Can I book a house in Stafford for Monday to Friday only?+
Yes. Many hosts accept weekday-only bookings for working crews, and some price them below their weekend rate. Ask for a Monday-to-Friday price when you enquire rather than paying the full nightly rate.
What should I check before booking for a crew?+
Confirm the number of separate beds (not just bedrooms), off-road parking for vans and trailers, a full kitchen and washing machine, reliable Wi-Fi, and whether the host can invoice in your company name.
