Overview
The western edge of the Peak District is one of the better-value places in England for a winter hot tub break. Leek, Rudyard, Cheddleton and the villages around the Roaches sit on the Staffordshire side of the National Park, close enough to Buxton, Bakewell and Chatsworth for a day out, but usually quieter and easier to book than the honeypot towns further east. From early November to the first week of January the area also has a run of festive events that can turn a lodge weekend into something more.
This guide covers where the lodges are, what winter stays are costing, the 2026 dates worth planning around, and how to approach the booking so you are not paying peak rates for a quiet midweek.
Why the Staffordshire side of the Peak District works in winter
The Peak District became Britain's first National Park in 1951, and the Derbyshire Dales side around Bakewell, Castleton and Hathersage draws most of the visitors. The Staffordshire Moorlands side is different in character: gritstone edges, reservoirs and small market towns rather than show villages.
For a winter break that matters in three ways:
Access. Leek sits on the A53 between Stoke-on-Trent and Buxton, so the lodges are reachable from the M6 without long stretches of single-track lane. That is worth a lot when the forecast turns.
Tell hosts what you are looking for
Post your dates, area and budget once. Verified hosts send you their best offer, and there is no guest fee.
Walks from the door. The Roaches, Hen Cloud and Ramshaw Rocks give short, dramatic walks with big views, and Tittesworth Reservoir has an easier lakeside circuit. Rudyard Lake, which gave Rudyard Kipling his first name, has a flat path along the water.
Choice of lodge types. Most of the stock is small: single lodges on farms, a handful of pine cabins by Rudyard Lake, and converted barns. Very few are on big holiday-park sites, so it tends to feel private.
Where the hot tub lodges are
Rudyard and the lake
The cluster of lodges around Rudyard Lake, a couple of miles north-west of Leek, is the most obvious base. Listings such as Rudyard Lake Lodges and Rudyard Heronsview advertise the lake and the edge of the National Park as the draw. Many sleep two to four, which suits couples and small families.
Leek and Cheddleton
Leek itself has larger detached houses with hot tubs (Springfields, which sleeps eight, is listed a mile from town) that suit groups. Cheddleton, to the south, is handy for the Churnet Valley and the steam railway.
Upper Hulme and the Roaches
Lodges under the Roaches put you closest to the best winter walking. Peak Lodge at Upper Hulme is a group property listed for larger parties. Expect steeper access lanes here, so check parking and whether the drive is gritted.
Cheadle, Kingsley and the Churnet Valley
South of Leek, around Cheadle, Kingsley Holt and Freehay, there are barn conversions and small lodge sites such as Quarry Walk. This is the closest area to Alton Towers and the Froghall end of the Churnet Valley Railway.
If you are looking more widely across the region, our hot tub lodge listings are a good place to compare what is live.
What a winter hot tub lodge costs near Leek in 2026
Published "from" prices give a useful floor. On Last Minute Cottages, seven hot tub lodges and cabins near Leek showed starting prices of between £84 and £331 per night when checked in October 2026, with most falling between £84 and £138. Hot Tub Hideaways' Staffordshire page advertises lodges "from £58 per night", though individual listings there are priced on enquiry.
Those are starting prices. In practice:
Stay type
What to expect
Midweek, November or January
Closest to the advertised "from" price; the best time to make an offer
Friday to Monday weekend
Noticeably higher, and many lodges set a two or three night minimum
Weekends between Chatsworth's opening and Christmas
Book early if your dates line up with the events below, such as 7 to 8 November or 21 to 22 November
Christmas and New Year
Usually sold as fixed blocks at the highest rate of the year
Two things push the total up that are easy to miss: a cleaning or hot-tub refill charge, and a pet fee. Ask for the all-in figure before you compare lodges. Our separate guide to what a hot tub lodge really costs breaks down the extras.
The 2026 festive calendar worth booking around
These are the dated events within easy reach of a Leek or Rudyard base this winter. All dates were checked with the organisers' or tourist board listings in October 2026; confirm before you travel.
Alton Towers fireworks, 6 to 8 November
Alton Towers Resort ends its theme park season with its Ultimate Fireworks Spectacular, themed "Across the Altonverse" this year, from 6 to 8 November 2026. Tickets including park entry start from £39 per person, with a VIP viewing area from £40. If you would rather avoid the noise, see our guide to Bonfire Night lodge breaks, which covers quieter options too.
Christmas at Chatsworth, from 7 November
Chatsworth's Christmas season runs from 7 November 2026 into early January 2027, with this year's house and garden theme based on The Twelve Days of Christmas. The Christmas market is included only for visits up to 13 December; from 14 December you get the house, garden and light trail without the market. All tickets must be booked in advance, and the market weekends sell first.
The Polar Express from Froghall, 7 November to 23 December
The Churnet Valley Railway runs The Polar Express train ride from Froghall station on selected dates between 7 November and 23 December 2026. Tickets range from £28.95 to £52.95 per person, with under-twos on a parent's lap for a £3 flat fee. Froghall is a short drive from the Cheadle and Kingsley lodges, which makes it the easiest festive outing on this list if you have young children.
Buxton Christmas lights switch-on, 21 November
Buxton's switch-on on Saturday 21 November 2026 runs from 10am to 7pm, with indoor and outdoor Christmas stalls at the Pavilion Gardens during the day, a lantern parade from the Palace Hotel past the Opera House, and the switch-on at the bandstand in the evening. Buxton is up the A53 from Leek, so a lodge near the Roaches works well for this.
Trentham Winter Light Trail, 20 November to 3 January
The Trentham Estate, on the southern edge of Stoke-on-Trent, runs its winter light trail from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with adult tickets from £17 and children from £12.50.
Bakewell Christmas market
Bakewell's Christmas market weekend is usually held in mid-November on Market Street, with more than 100 stalls in 2025. The 2026 date had not been published when we checked, so look for it on the Visit Peak District listings before booking around it.
How to get a fair price on a winter lodge
Winter is when owners of small lodges have the most empty nights, particularly Sunday to Thursday in November and January. That gives you room to ask.
Pick the nights that are hard to fill. A Monday to Friday stay in mid-November is far easier to price well than a Chatsworth market weekend.
Ask what is included. Logs, hot tub refill, late check-out and dog fees all vary. An offer that includes them is often worth more than a small cut to the nightly rate.
Be specific. Exact dates, number of guests, whether you are bringing a dog, and your total budget. Owners respond faster to a clear request.
Make a reasonable offer rather than a low one. If a lodge advertises £120 a night for a quiet Tuesday, a sensible counter close to that is more likely to be accepted than one well below it.
On Offer2Stay you can post exactly that request once, with your price, and let local lodge owners send you their best offers instead of messaging each one separately. You can post a request here. There is more on the approach in our guide to making an offer on a holiday cottage or lodge.
Practical notes for a winter stay
Roads. The A53 over the moors between Leek and Buxton can be affected by snow and ice. Check conditions before setting off, and choose a lodge nearer Leek or Rudyard if you are nervous about higher ground.
Hot tub in the cold. Owners generally keep tubs heated throughout a stay, but ask whether the tub is freshly drained and refilled between guests and how the cover is secured in wind.
Parking. Farm lodges often have gravel or grass parking. Ask whether it is hard-standing.
Dogs. Many Staffordshire Moorlands lodges accept dogs, but numbers are usually capped at one or two and a fee applies. Our dog-friendly hot tub lodge guide has a checklist.
Food. Leek has a good spread of independent shops and markets, and most lodges have full kitchens, so a self-catered Christmas or New Year is realistic.
