Get offers for your crewThere's a retention side too. Skilled people have choices. If working away for you means sharing a bed in a cramped house an hour from site, they'll remember that when the next job comes up. Decent accommodation is part of being a good firm to work for.
If you only change one thing, make it this: give people their own bed, and ideally their own room. People keep different hours, snore at different volumes and wind down in different ways. Sharing a room with a colleague for a night is fine; doing it for six weeks is hard on anyone.
If rooms must be shared, keep it to twin rooms rather than shared beds, and tell the crew in advance so nobody is surprised on arrival. Check that the bedrooms are reasonably quiet and dark — especially if anyone is on shifts.

Eating out every night is expensive and gets old quickly. After a long day, most people just want a decent meal and a sit-down. A properly equipped kitchen, a fridge big enough for several people's food and a table everyone can sit round make evenings cheaper, healthier and more sociable.

A short commute matters, but so does what's around the accommodation. A supermarket nearby, somewhere to get a meal out occasionally and perhaps a gym or a place to walk all make a few weeks away more bearable. A remote cottage with no shop for miles might be cheap and quiet, but it can feel isolating after the first week.
Think about the crew too. Younger workers may value being near a town; others may prefer somewhere peaceful. If you're not sure, ask.

For one or two nights, a hotel can be simpler. For a week or more, a home where people can cook, relax and do their washing tends to suit crews much better.

It costs nothing, and you'll often learn something useful — that two of them would happily share if it means being closer to town, or that someone needs a ground-floor room.
